The Indonesian Biodiversity Foundation (KEHATI) through its partner, Divers Clean Action (DCA), will participate in the 2018 Youth Leadership Summit in Nusa Dua, Bali Wednesday (31/10). In the event the DCA will invite representatives of young leaders from various countries in the coral planting at Samuh Beach, Nusa Dua.

Manager of Coastal and Small Islands Ecosystem Program Yayasan KEHATI, Basuki Rahmat, Monday (29/10), said that the Youth Leadership Summit is part of the 2018 Ocean Ocean Conference series, held in Nusa Dua, 29-30 October 2018, which followed by 144 countries. There are 65 countries that send representatives to the 2018 Youth Leadership Summit.

“The participation of KEHATI through the DCA at the 2018 Youth Leadership Summit forum is part of KEHATI’s commitment in marine conservation activities, especially through youth movements. Through the coastal and small island onservation program, previously we also collaborated with young generation to mctove, as we did on the Kepulauan Seribu,” said Basuki.

The planting of coral reefs was chosen by KEHATI for its participation in the 2018 Youth Leadership Summit because the activity was a form of concrete marine conservation action, specifically saving coral reefs at Samuh Beach, Nusa Dua, which is one of the favorite tourist spots.

Coral reefs, said Basuki, are part of a marine ecosystem that is prone to threats. The Bali Provincial Environment Agency in 2017 noted that 12 percent of the 7,200 hectares of coral reefs in Bali’s waters were damaged. There are several factors causing the damage, including: changes in water temperature caused by climate change, pollution or environmental waste coming from land, and layers of oil that are likely to be produced from marine vessel waste.

“It can also be the activities from reckless divers or snorkeling activities that do not pay attention to the existences of coral reefs,” added Basuki.

In this coral planting activity, KEHATI through the DCA will use the Mars Accelerated Coral Reefs Rehabilitation System (MARRS) method. This method utilizes the spider-web iron structure in the place where corals are planted. The structure will fill gaps between natural coral remnants, stabilize coral reefs, limit coral debris, and provide substrates for recovery habitats, and increase coral biodiversity naturally.

“With this method, fish can return quickly to rehabilitated areas, restore the balance of ecosystem, controlling algae, and create a basis for future sustainable fisheries, and sustainable marine ecotourism,” said Basuki.

The coral reef planting program will begin at 07.30 WITA. Before that, each leader representing youth from various nations will be given the opportunity to give a speech. The event will be closed with diving and snorkeling together and planting 50 coral spider structures.
