Indonesia has a very strategic geographical location because it is an archipelago located in the tropics. Indonesia has many islands consisting of 17,500 islands with a long coastline reaching 81,000 km or about 14% of the world’s coastline. Indonesia’s geographical position is flanked by two continents, namely Asia and Australia, and two oceans (Pacific and Indian). In addition, 75% of Indonesia’s territory is dominated by oceans, so it is also known as a maritime country. Thus, Indonesia has the potential for natural wealth with high mega-diversity. This shows that the role of the coastal and marine sectors can contribute significantly to the Indonesian economy.
Mangrove forest is one of the unique natural ecosystems with high ecological and economic value. Utilization of mangrove ecosystems, namely in the form of important ecological functions, such as controlling coastal erosion, stabilizing sediment and trapping waste, protecting coral reefs and land in coastal areas, supplying detritus and nutrients for nearby coastal waters, raising larvae and breeding of fish, crabs and economically valuable wildlife. Mangrove forests provide a source of life for organisms from the roots to the tips of the leaves.
In commemoration of World Mangrove Day on July 26, 2020, KEHATI Foundation held an online discussion presenting adequate pioneers at the local level in maintaining this mangrove ecosystem. The discussion was held on Tuesday (21/07/2020) and the material can be downloaded via the link below:
