The Tengkawang tree has long been recognized for its beneficial properties by the indigenous Dayak people, dating back to their ancestors. One of its notable benefits is its unique vegetable fat or margarine. Recently, its usefulness has also been discovered for non-food purposes.
The multitude of useful properties in Tengkawang has led the Dayak community in West Kalimantan to regard it as the tree of life. The indigenous Dayak community residing in Sahan Village, Bengkayang Regency, specifically focuses on the prominent Tengkawang variety known as Tengkawang Layar (Shorea mecistopteryx).
Unlike other Tengkawang species, Tengkawang Layar grows and bears fruit nearly every year in the Pikul Pengajid Indigenous Forest. This is a rare occurrence. INTAN, an institution, collaborates with the village residents to ensure that the non-timber forest products can be utilized as the village’s flagship commodity.
It turns out that the market is doing quite well. Tengkawang is slowly becoming a non-timber forest product with a fairly high economic value. In addition to enhancing the capacity of the community through the establishment of cooperatives, INTAN also provides support to ensure that these cooperatives can market their products more widely and in accordance with existing procedures.
The journey towards obtaining legal recognition as a safe product and sustainable management is summarized in this book. The group dynamics have been successfully surpassed and have not deterred the spirit to continue striving. This book also discusses stories that can serve as valuable lessons for those in need.
