Likotuden Hamlet stands out as a renowned sorghum village and serves as the main hub for sorghum development on Flores Island. Notably, it boasts production house facilities equipped with a diverse range of sorghum processing machines such as threshers, sorghum machines, sorghum stalk presses, choppers, and packaging machines.

Sorghum consumption has experienced a resurgence, with people now embracing it as a staple food. This shift in dietary preferences extends to young children under the age of five, who are introduced to sorghum food as an additional source of nutrition through the esteemed Community Health Center program.

In an effort to optimize their harvest, the sorghum farmers of Likotuden have mutually agreed to retain 40% of their yield for personal consumption. The remaining 60% is set aside for sale, contributing to the sustainable growth of the local sorghum industry.

The achievement of the sorghum initiative in Likotuden owes much to YASPENSEL’s collaboration as KEHATI’s on-ground associate. Among the esteemed advocates of YASPENSEL, Maria Loretha, renowned as Mama Sorghum, stands out. Maria Loretha’s unwavering dedication in advocating sorghum as a native culinary choice in Flores has earned her well-deserved recognition, including esteemed accolades like the KEHATI Award, Kartini Award, Ashoka Award, S.he Can! Awards, and more.
